| Summary, etc. | RésuméBien que la moitié de la population mondiale vive aujourd’hui en ville, le « droit à la ville » invoqué par Henri Lefebvre dans les années 1960 se fait encore attendre. La plupart des citadins manquent non seulement du pouvoir et de la capacité d’influencer leur lieu de vie, mais sont de surcroît parfois clairement exclus de l’espace dit public. Contre ce double rejet de leur droit à la ville, certains ont conçu, sciemment ou non, des gestes quotidiens de résistance en marquant leur environnement ou en en subvertissant l’usage. Malgré son apparence inoffensive, le jardinage urbain s’est révélé être un outil efficace pour protester contre la condition urbaine telle qu’elle est modelée et définie par les puissants et les riches, qu’ils soient publics ou privés. Bien que cette pratique gagne de plus en plus de reconnaissance de par le monde, surtout dans les villes nord-américaines, comme propose de le montrer cet article, la réappropriation de l’espace urbain par l’horticulture – si minime soit-il – reste d’actualité en tant qu’outil de mobilisation citoyenne. |

| Summary, etc. | Even though half of the world's population now lives in cities, the “right to the city,” which was called for by Henri Lefebvre in the 1960s, is not yet a reality for all. Not only do most urbanites lack the power and ability to shape their living environment, but they are sometimes excluded from the so-called public space altogether. Against this double rejection of their right to the city, some of them have imagined, whether consciously or not, daily acts of resistance by marking their surroundings or subverting their use. Urban gardening, despite its apparent innocuousness, has proved to be a powerful tool for protesting against the urban condition as shaped and defined by the ruling powers, both public and private. Even though the practice is now gaining recognition all over the world, the claiming of urban space—even minimal—through horticulture is still underway. |
