| Summary, etc. | RÉSUMÉ Depuis que les registres de la Pénitencerie apostolique ont été mis à la disposition d’un certain nombre de chercheurs en 1983, un nombre considérable de travaux ont été écrits sur le sujet, en particulier des répertoires comportant des documents originaux relatifs à la Norvège, à la Pologne et à l’Empire. La France, en revanche, n’a pas fait l’objet d’études majeures. Après avoir retracé la bibliographie du sujet, cet article fournit une brève introduction au fonctionnement de l’office pontifical depuis son origine vers 1200 jusqu’à son abandon sous sa forme médiévale lors de la réforme de 1569. Les deux dernières parties traitent de cas d’espèce relatifs à la violence. Ils étudient l’absolution des péchés, les dispenses pour empêchements sacramentels et, plus généralement, ce qu’on appelle les lettres déclaratoires dont le contenu invite à une comparaison avec les lettres de pardon en Angleterre et les lettres de rémission en France. |

| Summary, etc. | ABSTRACT Since the records of the late medieval Apostolic Penitentiary have been made available to a select group of scholars in 1983, a considerable amount of work on the subject has been published, including repertories with original documentation from Norway, Poland, and the Empire. France, on the other hand, has not been the focus of major studies. Following a section devoted to bibliography, the present article provides a brief introduction to the functioning of the papal office from its origins in the 1200s to the abandonment of its medieval format by way of reform in 1569. The final two parts discuss concrete case material in connection with violence, surveying absolutions from sin, dispensations from sacramental impediments, and more extensively, the so-called declaratory letters, the contents of which invite further comparison with contemporary royal Letters of pardon from England and the French Lettres de rémission. |
