| Summary, etc. | RESUME Gambetta et Ferry ont joué tous deux un rôle décisif dans la fondation de la IIIe République. L’examen de leurs correspondances permet de suivre l’évolution subtile de leur relation personnelle. Dans leur combat commun, le Lorrain réservé a subi l’ascendant du Méridional éloquent et il s’est vite tissé entre eux une chaleureuse amitié. Peu à peu, celle-ci s’est distendue et, après la conquête du pouvoir par les républicains, les ambitions se sont durement affrontées. Aujourd’hui, Ferry, loué pour son œuvre scolaire, désavoué pour son œuvre coloniale, demeure plus présent que son ami et rival dans la mémoire collective des Français. |

| Summary, etc. | ABSTRACT Gambetta and Ferry have both played a determinant part in the IIIrd Republic foundation. The study of their letters allows to observe the subtle evolution of their personal intercourse. In their common fight, the reserved Lorrain has been subjected to the influence of the eloquent Meridional and they stroke up a hearty friendship. This relationship insensibly slackened and, after the republican victory, their ambitions roughly attacked each other. To day, Ferry, praised for his school reforms, disapproved for his colonial part, remains more alive than his friend and rival in the collective remebrance of French people. |
