| Summary, etc. | À l’opposé de l’image d’Épinal très répandue d’une littérature médiévale imprégnée d’amour adultère, les « romans de couple » (ou roman sentimentaux) de la fin du Moyen Âge chantent le bonheur d’un amour vécu dans le mariage. En ce, ils reflètent les normes canoniques (monogamie perpétuelle, mariage par consentement des époux) et les évolutions contemporaines dans la théologie, la médecine et le droit L’amour conjugal est présenté dans ces romans comme étant l’équivalent de la charité (caritas ) chrétienne ; l’affection réciproque du couple est considérée comme la meilleure préparation à la gouvernance de la société, et non pas comme un obstacle à l’intégration de l’individu dans cette société. Loin de constituer une littérature d’évasion, ces romans sont un miroir des changements de mentalité et de société qui ont lieu à la fin du Moyen Âge. |

| Summary, etc. | L. OTIS-COUR, Love matches, charity and society in medieval «couple romances ». Belying the stereotype of a medieval literature obsessed with adulterous love, the « couple romances» (or sentimental romances) of the late Middle Ages celebrate the happiness stemming from love experienced in marriage. In this respect, they reflect canonical norms (perpetual monogamy, marriage by consent of the spouses) and contemporary developments in theology, medicine and law. Conjugal love is presented in these romances as the equivalent of Christian charity (caritas); the reciprocal affection of the couple is judged to be the best preparation for the government of society, and not an obstacle to the integration of the individual into society. Far from constituting an « escape literature», these romances hold a mirror to the changes in mentality and society taking place at the end of the Middle Ages. |
