| Summary, etc. | L’œuvre de Deschamps témoigne d’un « versant » latin de sa culture, souvent négligé en raison de l’importance de la production française. L’article passe en revue les traductions (Lai de fragilité humaine, Geta), les œuvres originales en latin, en prose (une pièce sur le schisme) et en vers (une douzaine de pièces dont deux d’une certaine envergure), en s’arrêtant plus particulièrement sur le statut des textes et les techniques de versification mises en œuvre. Il montre que Deschamps manie parfaitement la langue (tout en ignorant la métrique quantitative) et qu’il n’y a pas de lien particulier entre contenu et expression latine : il emploie le latin dans des textes relatifs à l’église et au passé national, comme dans des pièces ludiques. Il s’agit chez lui d’une langue véhiculaire, il ne problématise pas son utilisation et reste totalement étranger au courant humaniste. |

| Summary, etc. | G.M. ROCCATI, Eustache Deschamps’ Latin Culture. Deschamps’ work testifies to a Latin side in his culture which has often been neglected because of the bulk of his French production. The present article will review his translations (Lai de fragilité humaine, Geta), original works in Latin, whether in prose (a play on the schism) or in verse (a dozen pieces, two of which are of some length), and consider the status of these texts and their versification techniques. It will show that Deschamps has perfect control of the language (though he ignores quantitative prosody) and that there is no particular relation between content and the use of Latin: Latin is used in texts about the Church or the national past as well as in playful pieces. He used Latin as a vehicular language, did not ponder its use, and thus remained outside humanist developments. |
