| Summary, etc. | Comment Joseph Raphson conçoit-il l’espace, dans son rapport à la détermination newtonienne de l’espace absolu ? La position radicale de Raphson, qui fait de l’espace un attribut stricto sensu de Dieu, ne permet guère d’éclairer les enjeux théologiques de la position de Newton. D’une part, Raphson n’appartenait pas réellement au cercle des newtoniens. D’autre part, et surtout, il pousse à ses limites la notion d’espace absolu en en faisant une entité spirituelle qui est en même temps ce que les corps ont de plus intime. Il s’engage ainsi dans une métaphysique que Newton refuse. |

| Summary, etc. | Raphson and Newton. The Theologization of SpaceHow did Joseph Raphson conceive space, especially in its relation to the newtonian conception of absolute space? Raphson’s radical position, which considered space to be an attribute of God stricto sensu, does not shed much light on the theological issues raised by Newton’s conceptions. On the one hand, Raphson did not really belong to the Newtonian inner circle. On the other hand, and most specifically, he overstretched the very notion of absolute space by turning it into a spiritual entity that itself constituted the very essence of bodies. By so doing, he paved the way for a metaphysics Newton refused. |
