| Summary, etc. | L’opinion est un jugement d’évaluation qui détermine, d’une manière qui va de la plus instinctive à la plus réfléchie, la valeur que revêt un état du monde pour un individu particulier. En tant que telle, elle se prête aisément à la lecture psychologisante que lui réservent la philosophie analytique, l’individualisme méthodologique et le sens commun. Pourtant, si l’opinion entretien bien un lien privilégié avec la subjectivité individuelle, elle ne renvoie aucunement à l’expression sincère et inconditionnelle d’un état mental. L’opinion est une relation intentionnelle qui répond, comme ses semblables, à des conditions d’ajustement qui permettent de la juger publiquement comme étant correcte ou incorrecte, appropriée ou inappropriée. Malheureusement, les conceptualisations dualistes de l’opinion publique tendent à remplacer la dynamique d’ajustement entre les jugements individuels et la raison publique par une incompatibilité de principe. La tension relationnelle qu’engendre la mise en commun du pôle apparemment subjectif et privé de « l’opinion » et du pôle objectif et commun de « publique » dans un seul concept tend ainsi à être occultée. Cette tension, inhérente au concept d’opinion publique, est remplacée par la consécration univoque d’une seule de ses composantes, ce qui la met dans la position inconfortable d’un pléonasme ou alors d’un oxymoron. |

| Summary, etc. | PUBLIC OPINION: OXYMORON OU PLEONASM? Opinion is a judgement of evaluation, ranging from the most instinctive to the most rational, that determines the value of a state of the world for a particular individual. As such, it lends itself to the psychologizing reading of analytical philosophy, methodological individualism and common sense. Yet, even though opinion is strongly linked to individual subjectivity, it is unrelated to the sincere and unconditional expression of a mental state. Opinion is an intentional relation that, like other similar relations, meets the conditions of adjustment making it possible to judge publicly whether it is correct or incorrect, appropriate or inappropriate. Unfortunately, dual conceptualizations of public opinion tend to replace the dynamic of adjustment between individual judgements and public reason by automatic incompatibility. Relational tension generated by the combination in a single concept of subjective and private "opinion" with objective and common "public", also tends to be masked. This tension, inherent in the concept of public opinion, is replaced by the univocal consecration of one of its components, which puts it in the uncomfortable position of a pleonasm or an oxymoron. |
