| Summary, etc. | L’évolution sanitaire, urbanistique, sociétale et démographique des 150 dernières années a conduit à l’extension des villes selon le phénomène de l’étalement urbain. Ce dernier impacte de manière considérable les ressources naturelles, l’environnement et la santé planétaire. Pour lutter contre ces effets négatifs, une des stratégies consiste à la densification urbaine. Les modes et les rouages de cette densification étant exposés dans d’autres articles de ce numéro, le présent texte se penche sur ses impacts, directs ou indirects sur la santé. Il décrit notamment les divers mécanismes qui président aux processus de pathogenèse et de salutogenèse (les facteurs et mécanismes générant la santé) qui ont constamment lieu en milieux urbains. Pour renforcer les premiers et réduire les seconds, la démarche d’urbanisme favorable à la santé est proposée comme une stratégie préventive efficace à adopter par les décideurs locaux et à faire plus largement connaître auprès des professionnels et du grand public. |

| Summary, etc. | Health, urban planning, societal, and demographic developments over the last 150 years have led to the expansion of cities through urban sprawl. This has a considerable impact on natural resources, the environment, and planetary health. One strategy which can be adopted to counter these negative effects is urban densification, the methods and mechanisms of which are discussed in other articles in this issue. This text focuses on its direct and indirect impacts on health. In particular, it describes the various mechanisms that govern the processes of salutogenesis (factors and mechanisms that support health) and pathogenesis that are constantly at work in urban environments. Healthy urban planning is proposed here as an effective preventive strategy to reinforce salutogenesis and reduce pathogenesis which can be adopted by local decision-makers and more widely promoted among professionals and the population. |
