| Summary, etc. | La définition des sciences participatives est large : « formes de production de connaissances scientifiques auxquelles des acteurs non-scientifiques-professionnels, qu’il s’agisse d’individus ou de groupes, participent de façon active et délibérée ». Elles donnent lieu à un foisonnement sémantique important, tant en français qu’en anglais. Une typologie est établie sur la base d’une analyse scientométrique. Les projets de sciences participatives connaissent une évolution remarquable ces dernières années et, en parallèle de leur reconnaissance progressive par les institutions, plusieurs exemples emblématiques attestent de leur intérêt. Ce phénomène ancien, dans les champs de l’histoire naturelle et de l’astronomie en particulier, s’est progressivement ouvert à une grande variété de publics et de disciplines scientifiques, dont la santé durant les « années sida ». Le numérique joue aujourd’hui un rôle décisif dans leur développement et entraîne une diversification des formes et des niveaux de participation. Il ne s’agit pas d’un effet de mode mais d’une réponse à l’aspiration des citoyens à participer, dans un contexte d’accroissement du niveau moyen d’éducation et d’innovation technologique et communicationnelle. Si les bénéfices cognitifs d’ordre social et sociétal des dispositifs scientifiques participatifs sont documentés, leurs porteurs font également état de difficultés et de risques spécifiques. Le respect de certains principes méthodologiques, déontologiques et éthiques favorise la qualité des productions et assure une plus-value pour chaque partie prenante. Soutenir les initiatives qui renforcent les compétences de tous les acteurs impliqués, chercheurs comme non-scientifiques-professionnels, est à ce titre salutaire. |

| Summary, etc. | Citizen sciences : a dynamics to be encouragedThe definition of citizen science is broad : “forms of production of scientific knowledge to which non-scientific-professional actors, whether individuals or groups, actively and deliberately participate”. They give rise to considerable semantic proliferation, both in French and in English. We propose a typology established on the basis of a scientometric analysis. Citizen science projects have undergone a remarkable evolution in recent years and, alongside their gradual recognition by institutions, there are several emblematic examples of their interest. This ancient phenomenon, particularly in the fields of natural history and astronomy, has gradually opened up to a wide variety of audiences and scientific disciplines, including health during the “AIDS years”. Digital science and technology today play a decisive role in their development and lead to a diversification of forms and levels of participation. It is not a passing fad but a response to the desire of citizens to participate in a context of increasing average level of education and technological and communicational innovation. While the social and societal cognitive benefits of participatory and citizen science are documented, the involved actors also report specific difficulties and risks. Respecting certain methodological, deontological and ethical principles is thus a key for the quality of citizen science and to ensure an added value for each stakeholder. Supporting the initiatives that strengthen the skills of all actors involved, researchers and non-scientists-professionals, is therefore beneficial. |
