| Summary, etc. | RésuméL’histoire de la mixité sociale comme catégorie d’action publique dans les politiques de logement à Montréal (province du Québec, Canada) peut être lue à travers des projets exemplaires et des moments-phares, qui l’incarnent à des échelles spatiales différentes. À chaque fois cependant, la mixité sociale apparaît plus comme le résultat d’un bricolage où interviennent plusieurs acteurs autour de l’enjeu du logement social que comme une politique top down. Elle est aussi davantage associée aux statuts d’occupation (propriété, location) qu’à des préoccupations de cohésion sociale. Les hlm, les coopératives et le logement abordable y jouent un rôle-clé. Enfin, elle se déploie aujourd’hui sur le registre de l’équité socio-spatiale et repose fortement sur le dynamisme et l’influence des organismes communautaires. |

| Summary, etc. | In this article we offer a reading of the history of public interventions promoting social mix as an element of housing policies in Montréal (province of Quebec, Canada), focussing on key moments and illustrative projects, which put the principle of social mix into practice at different spatial scales. However, on each occasion, implementing social mix is not so much a case of top down public policy as an improvised process negotiated between various actors around the issue of social housing. Social mix also tends to be linked less to preoccupations with social cohesion as to the objective of mixing housing tenures; thus, low-rent municipal public housing, cooperative housing and the broader concept of affordable housing all play a key role. Today, the notion of socio-spatial equity is invoked to justify promoting social mix, while its implementation depends heavily on the involvement of dynamic and influential community organizations. |

| Summary, etc. | ResumenLa historia de la mixidad social como categoría de acción publica en las políticas de vivienda de Montreal (provincia de Quebec, Canada) puede ser interpretada a través de proyectos ejemplares y de momentos clave, que la traduce a diferentes escalas espaciales. Sin embargo, a menudo la mixidad social parece ser más el resultado de un arreglo donde intervienen diversos actores alrededor del tema de la vivienda social que como una política “ top down”. También es asociada al estatus de ocupación (propiedad o alquiler) que a preocupaciones de cohesión social. Los programas hlm, las cooperativas y la vivienda abordable juegan un rol clave. Finalmente, la mixidad social se despliega hoy en el registro de la equidad socio-espacial y se basa en el dinamismo y la influencia de los organismos comunitarios. |
