| Summary, etc. | La proposition d’introduire dans les programmes scolaires une éducation au respect des animaux s’inscrit dans l’élargissement des définitions du bien commun qui mettent en jeu l’ensemble de la nature. Cet article attire l’attention sur une autre source. Le courant Humane Education qui s’est développé dans le monde anglo-saxon dans la seconde moitié du XIXe siècle. Il insiste sur les vertus propédeutiques de l’enseignement du respect des animaux : les enfants y apprennent le contrôle de la violence et l’ouverture vers des formes de vie différentes, les futurs responsables y puisent les manières d’être leader sans être tyran. L’établissement de ce lien a abouti au fait que, dans plusieurs pays, les mauvais traitements aux animaux sont utilisés pour repérer d’autres difficultés : violences conjugales, maltraitance des enfants, etc. Ces principes progressent lentement en France : les revendications apparaissent dans les médias, mais elles n’ont pas, pour le moment, trouvé de traduction institutionnelle dans le domaine de l’éducation. |

Paper on the “Humane Education” movementThe proposal of introducing into academic programs the respect of animals is part of the broadening of the definitions of the common good which includes all of nature. This article draws attention to another source. The Humane Education movement which developed in the Anglo-Saxon world in the second half of the 19th century. It insisted on the propaedeutic virtues of teaching children to respect animals: children learn the control of violence and becoming more open-minded towards different forms of life, future leaders learn how to lead without being tyrants. The establishment of this link has led to the fact that in several countries the bad treatment of animals is used to spot other difficulties: domestic violence, abuse of children, etc. These principles are progressing slowly in France: claims have appeared in the media, but they have not, for the moment, found an institutional translation in the field of education. |
