| Summary, etc. | RésuméLe titre de l’article de Claude Prudhomme, grand spécialiste de l’histoire missionnaire, indique le sens d’un événement qui a surpris, quand une jeune moniale de Lisieux, à peine canonisées (1925), a été proclamée patronne des missions à l’égale de François Xavier (1927). La mise en perspective des initiatives pontificales dans ce domaine sensible montre comment Pie XI mobilise Thérèse au service du mouvement missionnaire, notamment pour légitimer sa politique d’indigénisation du clergé. Toutefois, le nouveau pape, qui a une dévotion particulière pour la carmélite, obéit aussi à d’autres considérations : il entend ainsi saluer, à travers Thérèse, le rôle de la France, au moment où ses œuvres missionnaires principales (dont la Propagation de la foi) passent sous contrôle romain ; il désire aussi rappeler l’importance de la mobilisation populaire, tant en Europe que dans les missions, notamment par le canal de la prière dont Thérèse est une figure exemplaire. |

| Summary, etc. | Teresa, patron of the missions in the service of indigenisationThe title of the article by this renowned specialist in missionary history shows the significance of the surprising event when a young nun from Lisieux, recently canonised (1925), was proclaimed patron of the missions, alongside Francis Xavier (1927). He clarifies the motivation of Pius XI for this decision in a sensitive area by showing how he brought Teresa to the service of the missionary movement above all, to support his policy of the indigenisation of the clergy. The new Pope, who had a special devotion to the young Carmelite, gave additional reasons for his initiative ; through Teresa, he wanted to commend the role that France was playing at a time when its principal missionary works (including the Propagation of the Faith) were coming under the control of Rome. He also wanted to stress the importance of the involvement of the people, both in Europe and in the missions, above all by means of prayer, of which Teresa was an exemplary figure. |
