| Summary, etc. | Many non-profit organisations rely essentially, if not exclusively, on the participation of volunteers in order to function. Recent research into volunteer management provides a better understanding of the standard management practices of non-profit organisations, but rarely reveals the less formalised moments spent between volunteers. We develop the concept of ‘backstage volunteering’ to reflect the moments spent between volunteers, such as a post-concert meal. What role do these backstage moments play in volunteer management? Drawing on the case studies of 18 non-profit organisations in the solidarity and cultural sectors, we show that backstage volunteering can be used to coordinate, train, create cohesion and carry out emotional work between volunteers. In this way, we contribute to sharing an insight into the volunteering practices and provide a more complex and refined perspective on the inter-organisational episodes (Kreutzer & Rueede, 2019) of non-profit organisations. |

| Summary, etc. | De nombreuses associations reposent essentiellement, voire exclusivement, sur la participation de bénévoles pour fonctionner. Les recherches récentes sur le management des bénévoles permettent de mieux comprendre les pratiques de gestion des associations, mais ne donnent que rarement à voir les moments moins formalisés passés entre bénévoles. Nous développons le concept de « coulisses du bénévolat » pour traduire les moments passés entre bénévoles, comme un repas d’après concert ou un temps de décharge émotionnelle après une maraude. Quel rôle jouent ces coulisses pour le management des bénévoles ? Grâce à une lecture ethnographique de 18 associations des secteurs de la solidarité et de la culture, nous montrons que les coulisses du bénévolat permettent de coordonner, former, créer de la cohésion et effectuer un travail émotionnel entre bénévoles. Ainsi, nous contribuons à mieux comprendre les pratiques du bénévolat et à apporter un regard complexe et plus affiné sur les épisodes inter-organisationnels (Kreutzer & Rueede, 2019) des associations. |
