| Summary, etc. | En mars 1491, à Dijon, un foulon nommé Petit Jehan Bernardon est à l’origine d’une rumeur subversive : Charles VIII ne serait pas le fils de Louis XI. Selon Petit Jehan, la laideur notoire du roi serait une preuve de bâtardise. Les riches archives judiciaires de la ville permettent d’approcher au plus près les mécanismes de la construction de cette rumeur que le foulon, mercenaire à ses heures, avoue avoir appris d’hommes d’armes bretons. Il apparaît que le bruit de la bâtardise du souverain est d’origine princière et se forme en deux temps : à la fin de la guerre du Bien Public et durant la Guerre folle. Par ailleurs, l’étude de cette affaire permet d’étudier au plus près la réception de la rumeur par la communauté urbaine de Dijon. Les autorités municipales luttent activement contre un bruit qui pourrait subvertir la population. Cette dernière n’est toutefois pas passive face aux rumeurs et aux nouvelles qui circulent dans la ville et s’avère capable de porter un jugement critique sur les propos du mercenaire. |

| Summary, etc. | In March 1491, in Dijon, a fuller named Petit Jehan Bernardon started a subversive rumor: Charles VIII was not the son of Louis XI. According to Petit Jehan, the king’s notorious ugliness was proof of his bastardy. The city’s rich legal archives allow us to closely examine the mechanisms behind the construction of this rumor, which the fuller—who was also an occasional mercenary—confessed to having heard from Breton men-at-arms. It appears that the rumor about the sovereign’s bastardy was of princely origin and developed in two phases: at the end of the War of the Public Weal and during the Mad War. In addition, the study of this case allows for a detailed examination of how the rumor was received by the urban community of Dijon. The municipal authorities actively fought against this rumor, a potential source of social unrest. However, the population was not passive in the face of the rumors and news circulating in the city and proved capable of passing critical judgment on the mercenary’s statements. |
