| Summary, etc. | L’exemple de l’histoire du téléphone public, c’est-à-dire des téléphones à prépaiement placés dans les lieux publics, est utilisé dans cet article comme terrain d’analyse critique de deux courants théoriques sur la technique. Le premier porté par Gilbert Simondon, postule une évolution des objets techniques vers un idéal de simplicité, de cohérence, obtenu à partir de leurs seules composantes et techniques et matérielles. Le passage d’un téléphone séparant les fonctions de communication et de prépaiement à une intégration de ces deux fonctions est une illustration de la notion de « concrétisation » d’un objet technique selon Simondon. Mais le courant de la nouvelle sociohistoire de la technique représenté par Thomas Hugues apparaît davantage propre à rendre compte de différentes phases de l’histoire de la téléphonie publique, mettant en jeu aussi bien des éléments techniques que non techniques. |

| Summary, etc. | SOCIO-TECHNICAL APPROACH TO THE HISTORY OF THE PUBLIC TELEPHONE In this article the history of the public telephone provides the material for a critical analysis of two theoretical currents on techniques. The first, represented by Gilbert Simondon, posits an evolution of technical objects towards an ideal of simplicity and coherence obtained exclusively from their technical and material components. According to him, the shift from a telephone where the functions of communication and pre-payment were separated to an integration of these two functions is an illustration of the concept of "concretization" of a technical object. However, the new socio-history of techniques represented by Thomas Hugues seems to provide a more satisfactory explanation for the different phases in the history of public telephony by bringing into play both technical and non-technical elements. |
