520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc.
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. This article examines an original initiative implemented in the aftermath of the Second World War in Italy: the “treni della felicità”. These trains, which sent young Italians to host families for a few months to escape the misery into which the conflict had plunged them, transported 50,000 children, aged 5 to 12, between 1945 and 1948. Using a variety of sources (archives of political organisations, testimonies, press, etc.) and adopting a twofold approach (macro and micro), this article has two objectives. On the one hand, it aims to identify the actors who took part in this initiative in order to trace its origins and the stakes – particularly of a political nature – that underpin it. On the other hand, it aims to provide an account of the children’s experiences. In so doing, this article makes a contribution to the history of family in times of war and to the history of humanitarian aid, which is currently under renewal.
