Née dans une famille de riches propriétaires terriens coptes-orthodoxes à Assiout en 1916, la jeune fille fonda en 1936 l’Association féminine pour l’amélioration de la santé, dans le contexte réformiste de l’entre-deux-guerres. En confrontant le récit de Laïla Doss avec la littérature secondaire et le dépouillement des rapports de santé publique, l’article retrace certaines étapes de la vie de cette pionnière, en lien avec la lutte contre la tuberculose et la protection infantile, en insistant sur ses années de formation au temps de l’indépendance (1916-1936), puis sur la professionnalisation de son association à l’ère de la réforme sociale et du développement (1936-1954), avant de retracer l’évolution de son travail face au nassérisme et au libéralisme (1954-2015). |

Born into a wealthy Coptic-Orthodox landowning family in Asyut in 1916, she founded the Women’s Association for the Improvement of Health in 1936, in the reformist context of the interwar years. By confronting Laïla Doss’ account with secondary literature and public health reports, the article retraces some of the stages in the life of this pioneer, in relation to the fight against tuberculosis and child protection. It focuses first on her formative years at the time of independence (1916-1936), then on the professionalization of her association in the era of social reform and development (1936-1954), before tracing the evolution of her work in the face of Nasserism and liberalism (1954-2015). |
