| Summary, etc. | This article looks at rural collective living places, initiatives that bring together several individuals on a shared plot of land to experiment collectively alternative lifestyles, based on do-it-yourself, mutual aid, sharing and the rejection of consumerism. These places deploy a panoply of autonomous subsistence practices, connecting them to their living environment and to multiple mutual aid networks, which can reveal alternative economic and material modes of operation, putting certain principles of the modern way of life at a distance. Understanding the alternative material and economic reality deployed by these collectives is, however, a methodological challenge, and implies meticulous, engaging and fundamentally non-normative research, capable of embracing these dense, complex and political ways of life, without betraying their otherness. Based on an ethnographic exploration of 14 collective living places, we propose a methodological framework that appears to meet these requirements by combining several tools from anthropology and territorial sciences. A meticulous, collaborative ethnographic method known as ethnocomptabilité, based on inventories and systematic counting, enables us to gather precise information on the economic and material functioning of these collectives and on what “counts” for them. Combined with analyses of metabolic and economic flows, as well as the networks of interactions taking shape around the places, it seems possible to show the richness of these alternative lifestyles and the entanglements that make them possible, in order to feed our imaginations with other ways of living and providing for ourselves. |

| Summary, etc. | Cet article s’intéresse aux lieux de vie collectifs ruraux, initiatives qui rassemblent plusieurs personnes sur un terrain partagé pour expérimenter collectivement des modes de vie alternatifs, fondés sur le faire soi-même, l’entraide, la mutualisation et le rejet de la consommation. Ces lieux déploient une panoplie de pratiques de subsistance autonomes les connectant à leur milieu de vie et à de multiples réseaux d’entraide, pouvant donner à voir des modes de fonctionnement économiques et matériels alternatifs mettant à distance certains principes du mode de vie moderne. Comprendre la réalité matérielle et économique alternative déployée par ces collectifs est cependant un défi méthodologique, et implique une recherche minutieuse, engageante, et non normative, à même d’embrasser ces modes de vie denses, complexes et politiques, sans trahir leur altérité. À partir d’une exploration ethnographique de 14 lieux, nous proposons un cadre méthodologique qui semble à même de répondre à ces exigences, en combinant plusieurs outils issus de l’anthropologie et des sciences territoriales. Une méthode ethnographique dense et collaborative, appelée ethnocomptabilité, procédant par inventaires et comptage systématique, permet de récolter des informations précises sur le fonctionnement économique et matériel de ces collectifs et sur ce qui « compte » pour eux. Combinée à des analyses des flux métaboliques et économiques, ainsi que des réseaux d’interactions se dessinant autour des lieux, cette méthodologie donne à voir la richesse de ces modes de vie alternatifs et les enchevêtrements qui les rendent possibles, afin d’alimenter notre imaginaire avec d’autres manières de vivre et de subvenir à nos besoins. |
