| Summary, etc. | Si la guerre de Trente Ans n’est pas une guerre de religion, elle n’en a pas moins d’importants aspects religieux. Le religieux a en effet un poids très fort dans la conscience collective : affermissement des camps confessionnels, millénarisme, développement de la piété. Les soldats, encadrés par des religieux, combattent pour leur foi ; les princes donnent une justification religieuse à la guerre. Enfin, quand on parle de la guerre, on use de termes religieux, on voit des interventions de Dieu, de la Vierge ou des saints. |

Clergymen had a considerable influence on the collective conscience: they strengthened religious factions, spread millenarianism, and fomented piety. Soldiers, supervised by clergymen, fought for their faith, while princes justified the war on the grounds of religion. Contemporary texts about the conflict use religious language and describe the interventions of God, the Virgin, or the saints. |
