| Summary, etc. | En 1788, alors que la politique du roi Louis XVI (exil du parlement à Libourne, nomination autoritaire du corps de ville) entraîne des réactions hostiles à Bordeaux, circule un libelle intitulé Lettre du maire de Calais à Mr. L..., ancien jurat de Bordeaux. Sous le couvert d’une présentation sommaire des institutions municipales (présentation de candidats au souverain, Assemblée des Cent Trente), il se livre à une attaque en règle de l’intervention du pouvoir royal dans le processus électoral bordelais. En 1787 et 1788, il n’y a pas eu d’élection. Bien qu’attribué au maire de Calais, ce pamphlet est plus vraisemblablement l’œuvre d’un Bordelais bien informé de la vie politique locale. Il s’agit sans doute d’un ancien jurat, alors secrétaire de la ville, Alexis de Lamontaigne. Ce libelle témoigne, en cette veille de Révolution, de l’attachement des élites bordelaises à leurs anciens privilèges. |

| Summary, etc. | Did someone from Calais really write an xviiith century lampoon in defence of the privileges of the city of Bordeaux ?In 1788, king Louis XVI took arbitrary decisions against the city of Bordeaux, such as the exile of its Parliament to the nearby city of Libourne, or the authoritative nomination of its municipality. This caused hostile reactions in the city, and a lampoon was circulated, entitled Lettre du maire de Calais à Mr. L..., ancien jurat de Bordeaux. While it pretended to offer a summary of the municipal institutions, it was in fact a scathing attack of Louis XVI’s policy and his intervention in the electoral process in Bordeaux. In 1787 and 1788, there were no elections. Attributed to the mayor of Calais, this lampoon is more probably the work of someone from Bordeaux, well informed of the local political life. Without too much doubt, it was the work of a former alderman, or « jurat », then Secretary to the city, Alexis de Lamontaigne. Shortly before the Revolution, this lampoon shows how the city’s élites were clinging to their old privileges. |
