| Summary, etc. | Le présent article souhaite mettre en valeur une source largement inédite : les journaux de bord rédigés par les capitaines de la Royal Navy. Ils procurent des informations quotidiennes exceptionnelles, notamment sur le paroxysme du petit âge glaciaire puisque la décennie 1680-1690 est généralement considérée comme la plus froide des mille dernières années. Grâce à ces journaux, nous pouvons connaître la force des vents, leur direction, les précipitations et plus généralement les conditions météorologiques qui ont dominé à cette époque. Extraites des archives navales, ces données historiques, une fois interprétées sur un plan statistique, révèlent par exemple le caractère orageux de la saison estivale au cours de la période (cf. la bataille de Trafalgar). La comparaison entre les séries historiques obtenues et les séries contemporaines démontre ainsi l’intérêt majeur des journaux de bord qui offrent une résolution chronologique journalière. Incontestablement, ces sources navales constituent de nos jours un témoignage archivistique exceptionnel pour reconstruire le climat de l’océan Atlantique des XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles. |

| Summary, etc. | Ships’ logbooks were kept by officers of most major national navies from as early as the mid-seventeenth century. They contain daily accounts and descriptions of the wind and weather that was encountered on voyages that became evermore wide-ranging as the European maritime empires of Britain, France, Spain and the Netherlands became established. They provide a uniquely detailed and reliable source of marine climate data from the pre-instrumental period (before the mid-nineteenth century) for many parts of the world. Several thousands of these logbooks survive in national archives and this paper reviews their contents and character and the possibilities for developing this source in climatic and historical research. The author concludes by arguing that this important and abundant source of evidence for past climates has for too long been overlooked and deserves far greater recognition than it currently enjoys. |
