| Summary, etc. | En este ensayo, me ocupo de la metáfora del teatro que no sólo aparece en el título del Teatro crítico universal (1726–1739) de Benito Jerónimo Feijoo, sino que también fue aducida por Pierre Bayle en su Projet et fragmens d’un dictionaire critique (1692). Como trataré de mostrar, la metáfora del teatro en sí misma debe ser cuestionada críticamente, porque vincula más y otras dimensiones semánticas de las que solemos asociar hoy en día. Es cierto que, a principios de la Edad Moderna, la metáfora del teatro podía emplearse y se empleaba en multitud de contextos y con fines muy diversos. Sin embargo, la combinación de teatro y error, tal y como se da tanto en Bayle como en Feijoo, merece un examen más detenido. Se muestra cómo el Theatrum vitae humanae (1565) de Theodor Zwinger, que es el texto en el que Bayle afirma basar su Dictionnaire, introduce una noción de teatro que no se centra en el escenario sino en el auditorio. Esto es significativo tanto para las estrategias de escritura de Bayle como para las de Feijoo, ya que apunta a la gestión de vastos cuerpos de conocimiento y, en última instancia, a la citacionalidad de ambos proyectos. Al mismo tiempo, sitúa al lector frente a la sabiduría tradicional y prepara así un espacio para el modo emergente de la crítica –por algunos caracterizado como escepticismo– que informa los proyectos de ambos autores. |

| Summary, etc. | In this essay, I turn to the metaphor of the theatre that not only appears in the title of Feijoo’s Teatro crítico universal, but which was also adduced by Pierre Bayle in the Projet et fragments d’un dictionnaire historique. As I will show, the metaphor of the theatre itself needs to be subjected to critical reflection as it involves other and more semantic dimensions than we usually associate today. Granted, in the early modern period, the metaphor of the theatre could be and was employed in a host of various contexts and to a myriad of ends. Yet the combination of theatre and error, as it occurs in both Bayle and Feijoo, warrants closer inspection. I show how Theodor Zwinger’s Theatrum vitae humanae, which is the text that Bayle claims to model his Dictionary on, introduces a notion of the theatre that is not focused on the stage but on the auditorium. This is significant for both Bayle’s and Feijoo’s writing strategies as it points to the management of vast bodies of knowledge, and ultimately, the citationality of both projects. At the same time, it positions the reader opposite traditional wisdom and thus prepares a space for the emerging mode of critique – by some characterised as scepticism – that informs both authors’ projects. |
