| Summary, etc. | Depuis le XIXe siècle, plus de soixante-dix États ont choisi de déménager leur capitale, soit plus d’un tiers des 193 États représentés de nos jours à l’ONU. Les exemples ne manquent pas : Abidjan/Yamoussoukro, Kyoto/Tokyo, Istanbul/Ankara, Rangoon/Naypyidaw, Obock/Djibouti, Fès/Rabat ou Almaty/Astana. Le déménagement le plus récent, particulièrement médiatisé, est celui de Jakarta, la capitale indonésienne, pour Nusantara, sur l’île de Bornéo, officiellement inaugurée en août 2024. Montée des eaux, conflit politique ou succession dynastique, volonté de se moderniser … comment expliquer la détermination d’un États à déménager une capitale, à changer de lieu d’exercice du pouvoir ? S’agit-il d’un geste avant tout politique ou symbolique ? |

| Summary, etc. | Since the 19th century, more than seventy states have chosen to relocate their capital cities – representing more than a third of the 193 states currently represented at the UN. The most recent relocation has been a high-profile one, with the former Indonesian capital of Jakarta giving way to the new capital Nusantara on the island of Borneo, which was officially inaugurated in August 2024. Indonesia is not alone in taking such a step. How can we explain a political power’s desire to relocate a capital city, to change the seat of power ? Is this gesture primarily political, or primarily symbolic ? |
