| Summary, etc. | In their quest for international success, exporting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) heavily rely on their importer to succeed in the risky challenges of launching new products abroad. Drawing on the relational paradigm and the resource-based view, this study examines the effects of relational antecedents on open innovation with importers, as well as the impact of this type of innovation on export performance. Based on a survey of 205 French exporting SMEs and 15 semi-structured interviews with export managers, we highlight the crucial role of trust and communication in shaping open innovation with importers. Our analyses also reveal that open innovation with importers is key for ensuring the export performance of new products and, more broadly, the overall SMEs export performance. |

| Summary, etc. | Dans leur quête de succès à l’international, les petites et moyennes entreprises (PME) exportatrices se reposent fortement sur leurs partenaires importateurs afin de réussir le pari risqué des lancements des nouveaux produits à l’international. En mobilisant le paradigme relationnel et sur la théorie fondée sur les ressources, cette recherche teste les effets des antécédents relationnels sur l’innovation ouverte avec l’importateur, ainsi que les conséquences de ce type d’innovation sur leur performance exportatrice. Grâce à une enquête auprès de 205 PME exportatrices françaises et de 15 entretiens semi-directifs avec les managers export, nous mettons en lumière le rôle incontournable de la confiance et de la communication dans le façonnage de l’innovation ouverte avec l’importateur. Nos analyses révèlent également que l’innovation ouverte avec l’importateur est un levier clé afin de garantir la performance exportatrice du nouveau produit et plus globalement la performance exportatrice des PME. |
