The two world wars profoundly changed this perception : American power asserted itself, and the idea of a political organisation of Europe emerged as a means of stabilising the continent in the long term. After 1945, the United States actively supported integration projects, particularly in the context of the Cold War, when European unification was seen as an essential element of Western security. However, this support was accompanied by ambivalence, linked to the defence of American interests and internal European resistance. The text as a whole thus highlights the complexity and gradual evolution of American policy towards a united Europe. |
