Summary, etc. | The Pan American Games are the oldest ongoing continental competition in the world. Though the idea took hold as early as the 1920s, it was not until 1951 that the first Pan American Games were held in Buenos Aires. At that time, tensions were running high between the United States and Argentina. This article retraces the origins of the competition, its diplomatic agenda, and the geopolitical issues at stake, shedding light on the Peronist government’s involvement in the organization of the event. Finally, this study examines the success and scope of this “celebration of Pan-American youth” by analyzing its international reception. |
