Cette contribution met en évidence la lenteur de l’indigénisation du clergé dans les missions africaines comme un facteur clé de cette carence. S’appuyant sur les vota soumis à la commission préparatoire du concile par les prélats de l’Église africaine, dont la plupart étaient des missionnaires expatriés, l’article identifie certains éléments qui ont entravé l’émergence du clergé autochtone, tels que l’appréhension concernant le célibat sacerdotal chez les indigènes, le manque de ressources et de personnel nécessaires pour former un clergé local, ainsi que l’obstacle que constitue la naissance « illégitime ». |

| Summary, etc. | The scarcity of priests was one of the main challenges of the nascent Catholic Church in Africa on the eve of the Second Vatican Council. This contribution highlights the slowed indigenisation of the clergy in the African missions as a key factor behind this dearth. Drawing on the vota submitted to the Council’s Antepreparatory Commission by prelates of the African Church, most of whom were expatriate missionaries, the study identifies certain elements that hampered the emergence of the local clergy, such as the apprehension regarding priestly celibacy among the natives, lack of resources and personnel needed to form a native clergy, as well as the impediment concerning illegitimacy. |
