| Summary, etc. | La question du français comme langue d’usage public au Québec fait l’objet de tensions et de conflits depuis de nombreuses décennies. Réalité historique, l’enjeu linguistique ré-émerge de manière spectaculaire, parfois violente, à compter des années 1960, en raison de l’activisme citoyen. Devant ces tensions, l’État du Québec légifère pour promouvoir le français dans l’espace public. Cet article propose une analyse synthétique de l’enjeu linguistique au Québec. Il place l’enjeu linguistique dans une perspective politique de manière à identifier les causes de la mobilisation citoyenne autour de la question linguistique et les stratégies de l’État québécois pour gérer ce débat social. |

| Summary, etc. | Linguistic Stakes in QuebecThe issue of French as the language of public use in Quebec has created tension and conflict for many decades. An inescapable historical reality, the language issue has re-emerged dramatically, and sometimes violently, since the 1960s as a product of citizen activism. Faced with these tensions, the State of Quebec has legislated to promote the use of French in the public sphere. This article offers an analytical overview of the language issue in Quebec. It adopts a political perspective in order to identify the causes that led to citizen mobilisation on the question of language and the strategies that the government has adopted to manage this social debate. |
