520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc.
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. This survey over nearly two centuries examines the architectural development decade by decade, linked to those of France during the colonial period, sometimes borrowing from local architecture with orientalist and Art Deco trends, and adapting to the Mediterranean or Saharan climate. At the beginning of the 20th century, the Perret company mastered reinforced concrete in Oran, a material that would bring it to the forefront of the architectural scene. With Le Corbusier in the 1930s, and later during the 1950s, the Modern Movement found in Algeria a field for experimentation. After independence, the socialist state launched major programs for public facilities and housing, led by public design agencies employing foreign cooperants. Internationally renowned architects built universities, such as the Brazilian Oscar Niemeyer or the Japanese Kenzo Tange, and large tourist complexes were entrusted to the French architect Fernand Pouillon. The liberal turn of the 1990s saw numerous private Algerian firms take over from public agencies, with the desire to write their own identity.
