| Summary, etc. | RésuméNés dans l’Angleterre victorienne, les sports athlétiques se diffusent en France dès la monarchie de Juillet par le jeu de la circulation des élites. À la fin du xixe siècle, une conjonction de facteurs semble créer des conditions favorables à une « greffe du modèle anglais », tout particulièrement dans le Nord de la France : intensification des échanges commerciaux et culturels dans les villes portuaires, essor du tourisme balnéaire, présence de nombreux ressortissants britanniques expliquent cet essaimage. Courses de chevaux, régates, lawn-tennis, golf se pratiquent au sein de clubs ayant adopté les usages et règles de la gentry. Le projet urbanistique de la station touristique de Paris-Plage (dès 1881) illustre ce véritable « take-off » du sport sur le littoral de la mer du Nord, et ce malgré quelques voix discordantes : médecins hygiénistes et éducateurs privilégiant des formes de pratiques gymnastiques plus normatives, notamment au sein de l’École républicaine. L’ancrage du football-association au début du vingtième siècle est la marque la plus visible de cette « Entente cordiale » sportive : présence de joueurs anglais au sein des clubs nordistes, fréquentes rencontres avec les clubs d’Outre-Manche, adoption des règles et systèmes de jeu en usage de l’autre côté du Channel. Loin de constituer une parenthèse dans cette dynamique, la première guerre mondiale accélère ce processus d’acculturation, à l’origine de la massification des pratiques et du spectacle sportif en France des années vingt. |

| Summary, etc. | Diffusion of Athletic Sports Across the Pas-de-Calais Coastal Region (late xixth Century – 1920s) : « A Transplant of the English Model » or « Mésentente Cordiale » ?Born in Victorian England, athletic sports spread across France as early as during the July monarchy, thanks to the comings and goings of the gentility. At the end of the XIXth century, a combination of factors seems to create suitable conditions for a « transplant of the English model », primarily in northern France : the intensification of commercial and cultural exchanges in port cities, the development of seaside holidays, the presence of numerous British nationals explain this spreading. More and more people join clubs that adopt the uses and the rules of the gentry in order to practice horse racing, sailing contests, lawn-tennis, golfing. The urban project of the Paris-Plage resort (implemented as early’s 1881) illustrates the scope of this real « taking-off » of sport along the shores of the Channel, in spite of a few discordant opinions : those of medical experts concerned with hygiene and those of education specialists who prefer more normative forms of gymnastic practice, and particularly within the school of the republic. The establishment of association football in the early twentieth century is the most highly visible sign of this sportive « entente cordiale » : presence of English players in soccer clubs of northern France, numerous games against English teams, adoption of the rules and the game systems in practice on the other side of the Channel. Far from meaning a break in this drive, World War I will accelerate this process of acculturation that lies at the origin of the development of mass-practice and sports events in France in the 1920s. |
