| Summary, etc. |

| Summary, etc. | Irish Exiles in Poitou in the xviith and xviiith CenturiesIn the xviith and xviiith centuries, Poitou sees the arrival of a small number of immigrants from Ireland, probably attracted there by the atmosphere of Catholic reconquest but also by the Irish college established in the provincial capital in 1674. These exiles belong to various social categories, even though the Jacobite wave that followed the victory of William of Orange gives a more military tinge to their presence. They nevertheless all suffer from a certain degree of destitution which compells them to resort frequently to the solidarity networks organized by the diaspora and they have difficulties finding in their host society a position in keeping with their original status. |
