| 520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
| Summary, etc. |
| 520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
| Summary, etc. | The debate about the early burial of the Jews, which took place in Prussia in the 1770ies, is an important debate in so far as it concerns the image of the Jewish community, not only as a religious community, but as a cultural sphere based on other principles than the German community. Moses Mendelssohn, one of the most important representatives of the Haskala intervened in this debate on three occasions and in writings which seem to contradict one another. This contribution deals with the problem of the constitution of a specific culture when various approaches to culture are at variance. It aims at re-examining the interest of the concept of “cultural hybridity” in the context of the late 18th century and at demonstrating the role played by the Maskilim in this process. |
