| Summary, etc. | This essay examines virtual intimacy as an emergent relational form shaped by digital media, consumer culture, and gendered social structures among Chinese mobile otome game players. Drawing on digital ethnography conducted between 2022 and 2025, it analyzes how practices such as doll-raising and virtual family-making extend romantic fantasy beyond gameplay and reconfigure intimacy through human-nonhuman relations. The study shows how players’ projections and identifications with characters and dolls remain fluid, negotiated, and situational, unfolding within ongoing tensions between player communities and game companies. Situating Chinese otome culture within a comparative East Asian framework of girlhood and shōjo culture, the article further argues that virtual intimacy operates as a form of substitutive intimacy that buffers emotional risk under conditions of heteropessimism, marriage anxiety, and reproductive pressure. Rather than rejecting reality, virtual intimacy enables flexible selves to inhabit a suspended space between attachment and autonomy in contemporary China. |

| Summary, etc. | Cet article examine l’intimité virtuelle comme une forme relationnelle émergente, façonnée par les médias numériques, la culture de consommation et les structures sociales genrées parmi les joueuses chinoises de jeux otome sur mobile. S’appuyant sur une ethnographie numérique menée entre 2022 et 2025, il analyse comment des pratiques telles que l’éducation de poupées et la fabrication de familles virtuelles prolongent les imaginaires romantiques au-delà du jeu et reconfigurent l’intimité à travers des relations humain-non-humain. L’étude montre comment les projections et les identifications des joueuses avec les personnages et les poupées demeurent fluides, négociés et situationnelles, se déroulant dans un contexte de tensions permanentes entre les communautés de joueuses et les entreprises de jeux vidéo. Situant la culture otome chinoise dans une perspective comparée des cultures de la girlhood et du shōjo en Asie de l’Est, l’article soutient que cette forme d’intimité virtuelle fonctionne comme une intimité substitutive atténuant les risques émotionnels liés à l’hétéropessimisme, à l’anxiété conjugale et aux pressions reproductives. Loin de constituer un rejet du réel, l’intimité virtuelle permet à des subjectivités flexibles d’habiter un espace suspendu entre attachement et autonomie dans la Chine contemporaine. |
