| Summary, etc. | The Russia-Ukraine war, all the more so since it takes place in Europe, is often considered to be the result of an irrational behavior on behalf of Russia. Such a perception is actually based on a confusion between two forms of rationality: axiological rationality, based on values, and instrumental rationality, oriented toward a goal. Postulating that war is but the mere continuation of foreign policy by other, that is, violent, means, this article on the contrary shows that Russia’s decision to invade Ukraine was perfectly rational. |

| Summary, etc. | Entre autres raisons parce qu’elle a lieu en Europe, la guerre Russie-Ukraine est volontiers présentée comme défiant toute rationalité. Cette perception repose en fait sur une confusion entre deux formes de rationalité : la rationalité axiologique, fondée sur des valeurs, et la rationalité instrumentale, orientée vers un objectif. Cet article démontre tout au contraire que la décision russe d’envahir l’Ukraine est parfaitement rationnelle, dès lors que l’on considère la guerre comme la simple continuation de la politique étrangère par d’autres moyens, en l’occurrence violents. |
