| Summary, etc. | This article analyzes the struggle for municipal power in a French village during the first part of the 20th century through the lens of the relationship between working-class militants and rural elites. It adopts a social and localized historical perspective, with the aim of understanding the political mechanisms of exclusion and upward mobility for the working classes. These mechanisms operate first and foremost at the municipal level—the first rung of the political order— where the legitimization of the ruling classes is established in close proximity with the population, and thus faces the risk of direct contestation. This article examines how socialists and communists challenged and appropriated the municipal arena, as well as the political consequences of their rise when they entered town hall. |

| Summary, etc. | L’article analyse la lutte pour le pouvoir municipal dans un bourg français durant la première partie du 20e siècle sous l’angle du rapport des militants ouvriers aux notables. Il mobilise une perspective d’histoire sociale et localisée du politique afin de comprendre les mécanismes d’exclusion et de promotion des classes populaires. Ces mécanismes opèrent d’abord au niveau municipal, premier échelon de l’ordre politique, là où la légitimation des classes dominantes se construit au plus près des populations et donc au risque d’une contestation directe. L’article étudie la contestation et l’appropriation du jeu municipal par des socialistes et communistes ainsi que les effets de leur promotion politique lorsqu’ils intègrent la mairie. |
