| Summary, etc. | In a century dominated by Information Communication and Technologies (ICT) worldwide, governments of many leading countries have decided to implement ICT in their health systems. The first step has been on digitalizing medical records (e-Health Records or EHR). However, little has been done to translate EHR in different languages to enable patients who speak a different language than the official language, to better understand their medical condition. This does not just affect patients. Health practitioners worldwide need to communicate effectively between each other or with patients when the latter go overseas to seek treatment. As EHR will inevitably be part of our life and we communicate internationally using ICT, it is important to take into account the EHR’s linguistic aspect especially when it comes to patients’ medical safety and privacy, and even medical practitioners’ responsibilities. |

| Summary, etc. | Dans un siècle dominé par les technologies de l’information et de la communication (TIC), les gouvernements de nombreux pays ont décidé d’utiliser les TIC dans leurs systèmes de santé. La première étape a consisté à numériser les dossiers médicaux. Cependant, la traduction du dossier médical électronique dans différentes langues a été négligée. Une telle traduction aiderait non seulement les patients qui ne parlent pas la langue officielle d’un pays à mieux comprendre leur état de santé, mais également les professionnels de la santé qui doivent communiquer efficacement entre eux ou avec les patients lorsque ces derniers se rendent à l’étranger pour se faire soigner. Étant donné que le DME fera inévitablement partie de notre vie quotidienne et que nous communiquons à l’échelle internationale, il est important de prendre en compte l’aspect linguistique du DME, notamment lorsqu’il s’agit de la sécurité médicale et de la confidentialité des patients voire de la responsabilité médicale des professionnels de santé. |
