| Summary, etc. |
| 520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
| Summary, etc. | Historiae encomium is the title under which the Epistle to Galeazzo Visconti that the jurist Andrea Alciato wrote as a preface to his Annotationes in Cornelium Tacitum (Milan, 1517) is known since 1530. In this text not only does Alciato make an enthusiastic praise of history, which he considers superior to other disciplines, but a vehement defense of Tacitus, to whom he grants primacy over Titus Livius. However, there is not yet a modern edition nor a translation of this Epistle. For this reason I have prepared the first critical edition of the Latin text and the first complete and annotated translation, in order to facilitate the understanding of an opuscle with which Alciato marked a milestone in the tradition of Tacitus and the Tacitist movement. |
