| Summary, etc. |

| Summary, etc. | The Society of African Missions founded in 1856 by Bishop de Marion-Brésillac to evangelize Dahomey only obtained access to the territory after the death of its founder, in Sierra Leone in 1859. After their arrival on April 18, 1861 in Ouidah, the first missionaries were confronted with problems relative to the work of the local clergy to be established. The determination of Rome and the courage of Bishop Steinmetz, second Vicar Apostolic of Dahomey lead, despite the missionaries’ hesitations and their racial prejudices against Black people, to the founding of the local clergy in 1928. |
