Summary, etc. | Within the tradition of the universal priesthood of believers, restored to its place of honour by Vatican II, the 1983 Code of Canon Law states that the responsibility for catechesis belongs to all members of the Church (c. 774). Within this common mission, some Christians receive a particular, “ministerial” responsibility. In this regard, the Code lays special emphasis on the role of the diocesan bishop and the pastor. The development of Church life, however, invites us to recognise the possibility for the laity as well to exercise a canonically recognised ministry in this area. The Directory of 1997 has, fortunately, developed this possibility. |
