| Summary, etc. | La signification sociale de l’enfance a fluctué au cours de l’histoire, mais acquiert un statut central dans les sociétés modernes occidentales. Dans ces conditions culturelles particulières au sein desquelles l’enfant est « précieux » et au centre de tous les investissements, est-il concevable de s’en plaindre ? Les parents peuvent-ils dire leur insatisfaction ? Il semble que le processus de sacralisation de l’enfance n’ait pas atteint uniformément toutes les sociétés. Les rares données quantitatives relatives aux représentations de la parentalité montrent des écarts très importants entre la France et la Suède au sujet du pessimisme parental. Ce résultat est confirmé par une série d’entretiens (n = 38) menée dans les deux pays en 2023 : la complainte parentale est courante en France ; elle est absente, presque indicible, en Suède. Cet article montre comment des cultures de parentalités contrastées se développent dans les deux sociétés et tente d’expliquer les différences observées par le statut de l’enfance et par les inégalités de genre. |

| Summary, etc. | The social meaning of childhood has fluctuated throughout history, but it holds a central status in modern Western societies. Within these particular cultural contexts, where the child is considered “precious” and is the focus of all investments, is it still possible to express complaints about parenthood? Can parents voice their dissatisfaction? It appears, however, that the process of idealising childhood has not affected all societies uniformly. The limited quantitative data on parental perceptions reveal significant differences in parental pessimism between France and Sweden. This finding is corroborated by a series of interviews (N=38) conducted in both countries in 2023: parental complaints are common in France, whereas they are absent—almost unspeakable—in Sweden. This article explores how contrasting parenting cultures develop in these two societies and attempts to explain the observed differences through the status of childhood and gender inequalities. |
