520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc.
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. In an essay submitted in 1778 to the Academy of Caen, Pierre-Joseph Amoreux, a botanist from Languedoc, proposed to set up tamarisk nurseries in order to increase the economic value of the unstable seaside soils in the Kingdom of France. Beyond the usual distinction between nature and culture, this botanist utopia should encourage us to pay more attention to the historicization of this shrub, which grows in briny uncultivated lands. While seemingly a permanent feature of the lagoon landscapes in lower Languedoc, and growing outside cultivated areas, tamarisk began being exploited as a resource in preindustrial times. Used as fuel, fodder, or building material, tamarisks benefitted from various management practices aimed at conserving them. Meanwhile, engineers in the Age of Enlightenment increasingly came to see this plant, traditionally a contributor to micro-local seaside developments, as a possible source of help for land management. Inspired by the empirical know-how they observed, they eventually ended up adding it to their toolkit. Overall, a combination of environmental history and rural history leads us to categorize this shrub as a hybrid form.
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc.
