520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc.
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. This text offers an overview of the process of the Africanisation of the Catholic clergy, from the earliest beginnings in the nineteenth century (the first ordinations took place in Senegal in 1852) up to the time of the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965), which saw the acceleration of a genuine transfer of power to the native clergy. This summary seeks to shed light on the difficulties and the often bitter debates that accompanied, in the missionary world, the development of seminary networks and the objective, repeated by Rome from the twentieth century onwards but remaining virtually a dead letter until the Second World War, of forming genuine local clergy. The article also illustrates the strength of the tensions between missionaries and local priests in the colonial context, which led some of them to take part in the dynamics of cultural, religious and sometimes political emancipation at the end of the period.
