Summary, etc. To what extent is analyzing an Empire from its centre really possible? This paper raises some issues about this method by examining three angles of historiographical research: the postcolonial attempts to “provincialize Europe”, the academic works on Ottoman provinces, and the colonial legacy on North-African studies. It then focuses on another approach that could stress the sense of belonging in an imperial situation.
