| Summary, etc. |

| Summary, etc. | This article examines the reductio ad notiones communes, an argumentative strategy Christian Wolff (1679-1754) draws on in his Philosophia prima sive Ontologia (1729-1730). I frame this strategy within the context of Wolff’s interpretation of Euclid’s method, and his attempt to transfer to ontology what he viewed as Euclid’s employment of common notions in the Elements. I then suggest that Wolff’s attempt to reproduce the Euclidean model in first philosophy faces a problem related to the role of the imagination in the constitution of common notions. Finally, I provide an example of how this difficulty plays out in the case of Wolff’s account of substance. |
