| Summary, etc. | Ce travail s’appuie sur des témoignages et des documents collectés dans les centres de documentation pour mettre en exergue les instruments déployés à partir 1959 afin de galvaniser et maintenir la vivacité dans l’action des formations supplétives pendant la guerre de décolonisation au Cameroun. L’urgence de circonscrire et de juguler l’insurrection portée par l’Union des Populations du Cameroun, de surmonter les obstacles opérationnels et stratégiques rencontrés par les troupes et de combler le déficit d’hommes pouvant assurer le quadrillage du territoire, oblige l’administration coloniale française et par la suite, postcoloniale à recourir aux populations civiles. Ces jeunes regroupés au sein des unités supplétives, maîtrisant le terrain, l’adversaire et ses stratégies se démarquent par leur efficacité. Pour maintenir cette dynamique, plusieurs dispositions incitatives sont utilisées, notamment, les compétitions intermilices ; la mise à prix des têtes des guérilleros nationalistes ; la notation et la classification des unités par ordre de rendement ; la promesse d’intégrer l’armée et l’octroi des distinctions honorifiques. Le recours à ces modalités de rétribution est guidé par plusieurs enjeux. Il s’agit principalement de développer entre les supplétifs l’esprit de corps et de compétition, de renforcer la discipline au sein des unités, d’utiliser ces derniers pour soutenir l’armée camerounaise et pallier son déficit d’efficacité. Elle permet également à la France, dont le « désengagement » des troupes mobilisées depuis 1956, est amorcé de préserver son influence au Cameroun à travers la « continuité dans l’action » que les supplétifs assurent. |

| Summary, etc. | This work is based on testimonies and documents collected in documentation centers to highlight the different instruments deployed to galvanize and maintain vivacity in the action of auxiliary formations during the war of decolonization in Cameroon. The urgency of containing and curbing the insurrection carried out by the Union of Populations of Cameroon, of overcoming the operational and strategic obstacles encountered by the troops and of filling the deficit of men who can ensure the grid of the territory, obliges the French colonial administration and the postcolonial power to resort to civilian populations. These young people grouped within auxiliary units, considered as actors experienced in counter-insurgency, mastering the terrain and the adversary, stand out for their effectiveness. To maintain this dynamic, several incentive provisions are used, in particular, inter-militia competitions; the placing of a price on the heads of insurgent leaders; the scoring and classification of units in order of performance; the promise of joining the army and the granting of honorary distinctions. The mobilization of these instruments is guided by several issues. It is mainly a question of developing the ‘esprit de corps’ and competition among the auxiliaries, of strengthening discipline within the units, of using the latter to support and relay the Cameroonian army and compensate for its deficit in efficiency. It also allows France, whose "disengagement" of troops engaged in counter-insurgency since 1956, has begun, to preserve its influence in Cameroon through the "continuity of action" that the auxiliaries ensure. |
