| Summary, etc. | Photojournalism played an important role in the construction of September 11, 1973 as an event. Yet it could no longer be celebrated in the pages of Life magazine (1936-1972), and its legitimacy was seriously shaken. In fact, the Chilean crisis served as a catalyst for a number of shifts in the practices and geography of the genre. This evolution is analyzed through three examples: the creation of the French agency Gamma, the debates initiated in the US by photography magazines and cultural critics, and the work of Dutch photographer Koen Wessing. This essay is also meant to set forth the need to historicize Ariella Azoulay’s groundbreaking theories on the “civil contract” of photography. |
