520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc.
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. The question of granting migrants asylum is a major topic of contemporary debate, and seems to have arisen relatively recently, or at least to be closely linked to the introduction of national and international laws and regulations in the twentieth century. This article first considers the potential value of a comparison between the situation in the nineteenth century across Europe and its sometimes remote margins, and asylum as it is granted today. It then seeks to understand how nineteenth-century practices of welcoming and supporting refugees reflected rivalries between states, and differed based on the situation of those states within Europe.
