Summary, etc. This paper compares the austerity discourse during the Eurozone crisis, focusing on three heads of government (Mario Monti, José Luis Zapatero and Mariano Rajoy). Metaphor analysis shows the inherent tension within discourses on austerity as they sanction the autonomy of the economic sphere and its pre-eminence on politics. A second insight provided by metaphor analysis is that discourses on austerity have to comply with the symbolic requirements of holding political office.
