| Summary, etc. | Cet article examine dans quelle mesure John Rawls pourrait être considéré comme un allié intellectuel de l’écologie et du socialisme. Bien que son œuvre offre des ressources indispensables pour penser un éco-socialisme respectueux des droits fondamentaux et de l’égalité des chances, ainsi qu’une société post-croissance, le principe de différence, dans certaines de ses formulations, demeure ambivalent. La thèse de cet article est que ce principe reste habité par un résidu d’une logique maximisatrice d’efficacité qui peut être en tension avec l’égalitarisme socialiste, d’une part, et la protection de l’environnement, d’autre part. Une reformulation non maximisatrice du principe de différence est donc proposée, qui distingue mieux les exigences de justice et d’efficacité, et qui est davantage compatible avec l’égalité et la sobriété collective. |

| Summary, etc. | This article examines the extent to which John Rawls could be considered an intellectual ally of ecology and socialism. Although his work offers indispensable resources for conceiving a form of eco-socialism that respects fundamental rights and equal opportunities, as well as a post-growth society, the principle of difference, in some of its formulations, remains ambivalent. The thesis of this article is that this principle remains imbued with a residue of a an efficiency-maximizing logic that can be in tension with socialist egalitarianism on the one hand, and environmental protection on the other. A non-maximising reformulation of the difference principle is therefore proposed, which better distinguishes between the requirements of justice and efficiency, and which is more compatible with equality and collective sobriety. |
