| Summary, etc. | L’essentiel des conflits environnementaux suscités par les usines de la révolution industrielle furent résolus par des indemnités versées aux voisins. Comment les eaux et les airs, c’est-à-dire les « choses environnantes » qui déterminent la santé, selon la médecine néohippocratique, sont-ils devenus, au début du XIXe siècle, de simples objets de transaction financière ? Pour caractériser cette grande transformation, j’étudie la régulation policière et parlementaire des environnements artisanaux sous l’Ancien Régime, puis le rôle de l’hygiénisme et de la révolution chimique (quantification de la matière, industrialisation des procédés) dans le processus de libéralisation de l’environnement. |

| Summary, etc. | Most environmental conflicts created by the industrial revolution were solved by industries paying indemnities to their adjoining communities. How did air and water – which were major determinants of health according to neohippocratic medicine – become the objects of financial transactions ? To characterise this great transformation, I study the regulation of workshop conditions by local police and parliaments of the Ancien Régime. Then, I underline the role of hygiene and the chemical revolution (the quantification of matter and the industrialisation of manufacturing processes) in the rise of a liberal regime of environmental regulation. |
